MEETING WITH THE EDITOR
Cathy and I met with Robert, the editor, to talk about the progress of his work and hear his suggestions for some b-roll footage that we could grab to help him in the process. He showed us what he had done so far and also discussed some of his ideas. He has come up with some great ideas! And with 35 years of professional editing experience under his belt I find myself learning something each time I speak with him. He has given me gems of knowledge that I will apply to future projects.
We are hoping to have the rough cut completed by mid-September. Then we can pass it along to Peace for music editing and also begin submitting the short film to a few film festivals.
Cathy and I are also hoping to begin working on a trailer for the short film. We have ideas that we’ve discussed. Now it’s a matter of sitting down, clarifying the “message” we want to give the viewer and starting to edit.
SHOOTING IN DOWNTOWN LA
Immediately after meeting with Robert we drove downtown and met Francisco. We had contacted him earlier, rented some equipment and had a list of shots we wanted to capture. These are mostly images that will be used to add atmosphere and help with transitions.
One thing we rented was an intervolometer; something I must get for my 5D Mark II. With this we were able to grab still photos of the skyline at regular intervals and stitched them together later into a timelapse of the sun setting over the Los Angeles downtown skyline.
With the hood mount we captured more day and night time shots of downtown LA. Mostly of the highrise buildings but also of the streets in general. Things went smoothly…
…until the sun went down.
We wanted to capture the varied aspects of downtown LA, so our shots were spread out in various areas. As it became dark and we drove through areas close to “skid row” people would yell out at us and it was at times quite threatening. Francisco was quite nervous; he had been on a shoot grabbing the exact same type of footage and the car he was in was suddenly surrounded by people and they started attacking them!
Luckily, we escaped with only yells and suspicious looks. But I can imagine people feeling a little nervous about someone with a camera driving by at night. Even if it was not pointed directly at them.
Anyway, we hope it was all worth, right?!

I can hardly wait to see The Last supper. Looks like everyone is putting a lot of hard work into this project.
